Abstract

Cigarette smoking contains free radicals (FR) and it stimulates formation of FR. These harmful components may damage balance of oxidants/antioxidants and these processes cause oxidative damages (OD) on lipids and lipoproteins in cells and tissues. The oxidative damage may cause destruction of cellular membranes and insufficiency in all cells. In addition, OD may affect physiological functions of the pulmonary alveolus. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of short and long-term cigarette smoking on lung functions. Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) of 112 cigarette smoking for 1-5 years, 105 for 5-10 years and 126 non-smoker healthy volunteer male students by using an electronic spirometer (MIR Spirobank) was measured. Ages, heights and weights of students were determined. In conclusion, values of FEV1% and VEXT were found significantly lower (P<0.05) in smokers of 5-10 years than non-smokers. Although the differences among other pulmonary parameters in control and experimental groups were not statistically significant (P>0.05), values of cigarette smoking were lower according to the values of non-smokers.
