Abstract

Fifty adult patients who were prepared for elective surgery in ASA 1, 2, were divided in two groups. One group patients took 40 mg omeprazole and 5 mg diazepam orally an.d the other Second group patients only 5 mg diazepam as single dose in premedication. After induction, gastric secretion was aspirated volume and pH was measured. Patients who received omeprazole had a higher mean gastric pH than the control group (pH:4.8) The mean gastric pH was 2.2 for the patients who did not receive omeprazole. The results were statistically significant (p < 0.001 ). The mean volume of gastric fluid was 11.7 mi in the patients who received omeprazole. Gastric secretion was significantly decreased. For the patients who did not receive omeprazole the gastric volume was 27.4 mi and this was alsa statistically significant (p < 0.001). As a results we can say that single dose of 40 mg omeprazole significantly decreases the risk of aspiration pneumonitis in induction.
