Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to compare the shear bond strengths of three different universal adhesive systems to caries-affected dentin using the self-etch and etch-and-rinse modes.
Methods: Overall, 120 extracted human molars with occlusal caries were used in this study. Caries were removed until reach caries-affected dentin. Teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups and embedded in acrylic molds. Groups comprised Single Bond Universal (SBU; 3M-ESPE, St. Paul, USA) self etch, All Bond Universal (ABU; Bisco Inc., Schaumburg, USA) self etch, Clearfil Universal Bond (CUB; Kuraray Noritake Dental Inc., Okayama, Japan) self etch, SBU total etch (SBU-t), ABU total etch (ABU-t), and CUB total etch (CUB-t). After that samples were restorated with nanofil composite resin (Filtek Ultimate Universal Restorative, 3M-ESPE, St. Paul, USA) and shear bond strength tests were performed. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA) and independent t-test (α=0.05).
Results: No significant differences in the bond strength values of different universal adhesives obtained using both total-etch and selfetch modeswere observed (p>0.05). When comparing the different uses of the same adhesive, a significant difference was observed only in the CUB group (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Lower values were obtained when using the etch-and-rinse mode.
