Abstract

The current strategy in the prevention of parasitic diseases is mostly chemotherapy, because of the lacking or ineffectiveness of vaccines for life threating parasitic diseases. The chemotherapeutic options are being disrupted by drug resistance and that increase the need for novel drugs in parasitological treatments. The most common resistance mechanisms are decreased drug uptake, export of drugs from parasites, genetic modifications, loss of drug activity, and alteration of the drug target. In order to develop new strategies to control parasitic diseases, drug resistance mechanisms should be well defined. Moreover, it will lead to giving new effective treatment options for clinicians. In recent years, isolation and characterisation of resistance-related genes and proteins greatly increased our knowledge. In this review, we have mostly focused on new studies and common parasitic diseases.
