Radioprotective effect of CAPE on brain tissue of total-head irradiated rats

Abstract

Background: In this study, we evaluated if caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) has radioprotective effect on the damage in brain tissue induced by gamma radiation applied to rats, considering that may have inhibitory effects on ionizing radiation damage.

 

Methods: Thirty-six Sprague–Dawley rats were divided into four groups to test the radioprotective effectiveness of of CAPE by intraperitoneal injection. Appropriate control group was also studied. On day 11, brain tissues of all rats were removed and homogenized in phosphate buffer, and total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), paraoxonase (PON), arylesterase (ARE), ceruloplasmin (CER), lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH), and total-SH parameters were measured to determine if CAPE has protective effect.

 

Results: The ARE, PON activities and total-SH levels were statistically increased compared to the IR group and LOOH, TOS and OSI levels significantly decreased.

 

Conclusion: The date obtained in the study suggest that CAPE administration prior to irradiation may prevent brain damage by irradiation.
