Determination of High School Students' Eating Attitudes, Eating Behavior and Self-Esteem

Abstract

The study was carried out to assess eating behaviors, eating attitudes and self-esteem of high school students and to examine the relationship between them. The study used a descriptive design. This study was carried out 4 to 15 January 2010 in the high school students. The samples consisted of 446 students. The data were collected by using Questionnaire Form, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Eating Attitudes Test. The data were evaluated by SPSS statistics program. The mean age of the students was 16.07, 69.5% the students do not eat meals during the day and stated that they did not do the breakfast mostly. 81.4% of them indicated that they eat fast food-style food. Besides, regular breakfast, lunch and dinner eating habits were found to be quite inadequate. Course work or watching TV, eating junk food habits were found to be high. This study was a significant relationship between symptoms of eating disorders and self-esteem (p<0.05). It was found a significant relationship between BMI and self-esteem, between family attitudes and self-esteem (p<0.05). This study was found to be quite a lot incidence of unhealthy eating attitudes and eating behaviors. Inadequate and unbalanced nutrition affects health and school success. Therefore recommended that students acquire the habit of healthy eating.
